The
Alamos Conflict
The Truth of the matter
As
is customary, the Industrial Bananera Alamos S.A. Company,
has always paid its workers their due remuneration and socials
benefits in strict adherence to all current legal dispositions.
The Alamos Banana Industrial Company has complied and has
always been in compliance with all social obligations contemplated
in the Labor Code (Art. 42) (such as grocery store, dining
hall, medical dispensary, etc).
Despite what was expressed in 2002, an illegal collective
conflict was initiated, as the number of workers forming
the special committees never reached the number required
by law, that is, a majority. They tried to dupe authorities
by including participants who were not workers.
As
the workers’ committee was illegal, so was the declaration
to strike.
Workers involved in this conflict committed acts of disorderly
conduct and vandalism at the farm, resulting in accusations
before the relevant authorities, wherefore the police had
to intervene in order to safeguard company assets.
Notwithstanding the fact that the company complies with
all its obligations, a conflict was orchestrated, causing
substantial losses due to unlawful stoppage of agricultural
activity.
After the conflict was pronounced null and void by labor
authorities, the company reinstalled those workers involved
in this turmoil who wished to return.
The number of workers who engendered the conflict was a
minority who never had the support of the majority.
It was an unfortunate episode promoted by agitators who
attempted to destroy a very important source of work.
All actions were executed in accordance with the law and
the majority of personnel not involved in acts of vandalism
were protected.
As he has openly declared in all of his public speeches,
Alvaro Noboa is in favor of trade unionism. However, he
is against activists and freeloaders who attempt to live
off this noble institution, acting in clear violation of
workers’ rights.
The Alamos affair was handled politically because its main
shareholder was a Presidential candidate.
SOONER OR LATER, THE TRUTH WILL SHINE AS BRIGHT AS THE SUN.
