CHILD
LABOR
For
political reasons, Alvaro Noboa has also been accused of
supporting child labor on his banana plantations, which
does not reflect the truth given that, in the agricultural
context, child labor historically forms a part of rural
culture of farmers who not only asked, but demanded, that
their children participate in some kind of agricultural
labor, during vacations, in order to make ends meet, and
to avoid that idleness lead to delinquent behavior.
It is necessary to point out that the work performed by
these minors, and which fulfilled social and family needs,
was always appropriate to their age and received all the
guarantees and conditions contemplated by social and labor
legislation.
Ever since the country set about eradicating child-labor
in agricultural concerns, the Noboa Corporation took corrective
measures to the extent that child-labor has not existed
for many years, not even for minors between 15 and 18 which
is permissible by law, due to consistent political attacks
distorting the truth of the matter.
The eradication of child labor in agricultural companies
belonging to the Noboa Corporation is certified by national
and international organizations aimed at protecting adolescent
and child rights.
