The PRIAN presented an appeal to the Contentious and Administrative Tribunal against the charge of coercion pursued by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal against Alvaro Noboa and Vicente Taiano in order to collect a $6.3 million dollar fine for exceeding expense limits in the 2006 Presidential elections.
Taiano said they would exercise all legal possibilities within the country as a previous step before going to the international courts. According to Taiano, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal is not qualified to reach a decision in a coercive suit, which is a civil matter. He pointed out that the Electoral Tribunal is an electoral judge and only has authority to resolve matters in that field.
